This site is located within a remote area designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the surrounding water is designated as a Marine Reserve. All works complied with the restrictions under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance (AMO), as there are special monuments nearby, and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to ensure the indigenous plants are protected during the works, therefore logistics is a major concern.

Works on the existing block involve the installation of an aquarium, the provision of a main laboratory and technician area for marine related research and testing, a molecular laboratory, meeting rooms, and works to the existing drain channels and waterproofing works were carried out on the roof.

Addition & Alteration Works involved in this project include the construction of foundation, substructure and superstructure for a new Academic Block and Residential Annex, including the modification of the underground sewage system. Pipe piling as lateral support at bedrock level is required for lateral support during excavation.

Works were carried out in a well-planned sequence to cause minimal disturbance and interruption to minimise disturbance to users.
