This building was built as a castle in about 1861. In 1956, it was used as a hall of residence for male students of the University of Hong Kong and renamed as the University Hall of University of Hong Kong. The exterior of the University Hall has been included in the list of declared monuments of Hong Kong by the Antiquities and Monuments Office.
This project involved renovation and redecoration works of this historical building together with slope protection works. It included asbestos abatement works, renovation of the building façade, external works and structural strengthening. During construction, the existing student tenants moved out in stages, and due to the declared monument status and asbestos abatement works involved, the construction work became much more complicated and required careful coordination and planning.
